Testing for Saliva Quality, pH and Buffering Capacity
Saliva testing is an examination tool that Dr. Zembroski’s office uses to educate the patient, assist in preventive treatment planning and use to initiate changes in the patient’s oral hygiene and caries disease process.
Saliva plays a significant role in maintaining oral health. It is the body’s natural caries defense. Understanding patients’ saliva characteristics can give the dentist valuable information to determine treatment choices and strategies.
We test the patient's saliva in house and the test takes about 10 minutes.
• The test Identifies and measures patient’s possible Caries Risk based on Saliva Condition.
• We Test Hydration, Salivary Consistency, Resting Saliva pH, Stimulated Saliva Flow, Stimulated Saliva pH and Saliva Buffering Capacity.
• It is a Tool for Developing Preventive Care Strategies and Selecting Dental preventive products for the Dental Patient.
• Testing saliva is ideal for use during routine oral examinations and re-monitoring success of cavity prevention.
Our Office carries several patient treatment kits containing xylitol and we also carry a list of foods that can alter the pH of the saliva to help protect and prevent future cavity problems.
This test also allows us to formulate a successful protocol to fight medication induced dry mouth and dry mouth caused by chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
Biomarkers have been found in saliva for pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, lung cancer, oral cancer and diabetes and are currently being researched. It is our practice goal in the future to be able to screen for these deadly diseases from a simple saliva test.
